WATER EFFICIENCY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (WEMS)
The purpose of SS577:2012 standard is to enable organizations to assess and account for their water usage, and to identify, plan and implement measures to achieve water savings through systematic management of water. The SS577:2012 standard includes a set of frameworks and guidelines, suggested tools and best practices for water users to adopt so as to improve water usage and water efficiency.
The Singapore Accreditation Council launched a new accreditation program for Water Efficiency Management System certification in 2013.
It specifies requirements applicable to water usage, including monitoring, measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes and personnel that contribute to water efficiency. The standard facilitates organizations in preparing their Water Efficiency Management Plan (WEMP).
WHY IT IS NEEDED?
- Developed by the Public Utilities Board, SPRING Singapore, and industry stakeholders, the standard aims to provide a set of frameworks and guidelines, as well as suggested tools and best practices, for water users to adopt to make improvements to their water usage and efficiency.
- The requirements of water usage, monitoring, measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes, and personnel that contribute to water efficiency are spelled out.
- Companies that are certified SS 577 recognize the impact and savings of water usage, show responsibility in water usage accountability and also demonstrate their commitment to continually enhance their water usage and efficiency.
